Gifts For Children: The Classic Teddy Bear | Articles 4 Net Blog
March 16th, 2012Gifts For Children: The Classic Teddy Bear
When you think of gifts for children, the teddy bear seems to be the first thing that comes to mind. It works for all ages, from newborns to toddlers, to even older kids who just love their stuffed animals. It’s even a cute gift often given on Valentine’s Day between adults. The teddy bear never goes out of style and always seems to stick around, generation after generation. And while there are thousands of different kinds of bears, they all stem from the same history.
The history of the name of the teddy bear is as popular as the plush itself. The original bears were named after Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was “Teddy.” A hunting incident became the focus of a political cartoon featuring the president and a cute little bear, which inspired a man named Morris Michtom to create a plush toy in its likeness. He put it in the window of his shop with a sign that said “Teddy bear,” but not until after he sent one to Roosevelt to get permission to use his nickname. This was way back in 1902 and the bear has thrived as one of the most popular gifts for children ever since.
Early teddy bears were made to look more like real bears, with an extended snout and beady eyes. But eventually this was changed to a more baby face appearance to sell more and it’s worked. Now the teddy bears we know and love are cute and snugly (though the old versions are sought after as collector’s pieces).
Today, there are teddy bears created by all kinds of children’s toys brands but some of the most popular and widely known are Gund and Steiff. These companies focus solely on the making of plush teddy bears and other animals, and are synonymous with quality workmanship. If a child gets a Gund or Steiff, that’s a pretty big deal and a toy to definitely hold onto through the years.Teddy bears work well as a gift for newborns as something they can hold onto as they grow older. Lots of people I know have bears from the day they were born, still kept on display or at least somewhere in their homes as a keepsake. They also work well for not just holidays and birthdays, but to commemorate special events like graduations, Communions, and other major moments in a child’s life. There is a reason why the teddy bear remains one of the best gifts for children. It’s classic look and many possibilities means it’ll never disappear off store shelves.

Travelling Teddy Bears | lavalletown.com
March 13th, 2012
Have you ever seen a furry teddy sitting on a plinth in Trafalgar square? Or perhaps a small teddy bear posing for a photo in front of the rocks at stone Henge? Or even some small paw prints in the snow near the Mermaid in Copenhagen? If so, chances are you have seen a travelling bear!
Travelling bears are small teddy bears who travel the world in search of adventure and famous landmarks. They usually travel with a human friend who places them in front of well known monumnents and takes photos which can then be uploaded to facebook, a blog or the bear’s own website.
Not every bear is cut out for this life – they need to be very brave little bears and should also be small enough to comfortably fit in a bag. They should easily be washed too as the travelling life can be dusty.
There are a number of themes in this category, including educational travelling bears who belong to classrooms and travelling bears who are sent from person to person so they can experience as much of the world as possible.
In fact you have probably already unknowingly heard of a travelling bear. Paddington bear is a very famous example as he arrived in London all the way from Peru (having travelled on a ship to get there) and sat in a busy London station with only a suitcase and some Wellington boots with a note around his neck asking anyone who found him to look after him. He was picked up by a family and his adventures after this are legendary. This is exactly the kind of spirit that is needed for a particular Teddy to become a successful travelling bear. Other famous travelling bears could be argued to be Rupert the Bear, who, although does not travel the world much, does travel into magical lands and has amazing adventures that are documented in many comic books and even a TV series.
Bear Grylls does not count. Although he does indeed travel the world and in fact goes to places that many other bears would find it hard to survive, in spite of his misleading name he is not really a bear at all but is in fact a man who has taken a bear name. So although yes, he is a bear who travels he is not a travelling teddy bear and fails to make the cut.

Teddy Bear Vigil for Ayla Reynolds – WABI TV5
March 4th, 2012Waterville -
The public came together again for a vigil for missing Ayla Reynolds.
The toddler was reported missing on December 17th.
Participants were asked to bring teddy bears which will be delivered to a shrine near the Violette Ave home she was reported missing from, or they will be donated to police or other agencies that help children in emergencies.
The hope is to keep her name in the public.
“Just loosing sight of exactly what we’re here for. Sometimes people are just fighting and arguing. We would just like to put out the word, let her know we’re still thinking of her,” said Waterville resident, Carrie Sanford.
Green teddy bear pins were handed out to the more than 100 in attendance.
